About Prerelease & Release Events

Prerelease events are events held worldwide that give existing players a chance to try a Magic: the Gathering new set for the first time. These events are very casual in nature, are very laid back and tend to be very exciting. Prereleases are a great chance for new players to get into Magic: the Gathering with a brand new set and an even playing field for a new set. All worldwide prerelease tournaments are sealed deck format.

What is Sealed Deck?

The Sealed Deck format allows players to use the Magic tournament packs they're already buying to play games in a casual or tournament setting. Players simply open their tournament packs and the cards from up to three additional booster packs and build a deck from the cards they opened. Guidelines require a minimum deck size of 40 cards and allow players to add as many basic lands (Plains, Islands, Swamps, Mountains, and Forests) to their card pools as they like. If you're looking for a fun way to increase the size of your Magic collection and play the game at the same time, the Sealed Deck format is for you!

What is Booster Draft?

Booster Drafts are a limited play format like sealed deck, but instead of receiving packs of cards to open and build a deck, players take turns picking cards one at a time. 4-8 players can play in a booster draft. Each player receives 3 packs of cards. At the same time, players open the first pack and take 1 card then pass the remaining cards in the pack to the player on their left. As each player receives a pack, they take 1 more card and then pass. Players repeat this process for 14 cards in the first pack, then opens the second pack. For the second pack, players will reverse the direction and pass right. The third pack will then pass left. Once all cards have been drafted (42 cards), players build a 40 card deck out of their draft pool adding as many basic land cards as they like to their decks.
